Former homicide detective, Sam Casey, finds it hard to stay away from crime scenes, especially those where victims have died violently, and where the killers are still unknown. Centuries-old skeletal remains of Native Americans along with artifacts are discovered during the construction of a downtown office building. Sam has a difficult time deciphering her visions of two moons and the sound of gravel crunching until she realizes the two moons are headlights. The Chasen Heights medical examiner follows Sam's hunch and discovers that one of the victims died three years ago. Sam has more than a passing interest in the case. A family friend is in jail for threatening the construction workers. Sam's mother is less than forthcoming about artifacts missing from the dig site. And her husband, Detective Sergeant Jake Mitchell, is at a loss to explain how the missing artifacts ended up in his garage.

Elton Breyton III, who runs his construction company on a tight schedule, tries to pull strings to remove the archeologists. Why the rush?  Could it be he knew the victim was his young wife, Amanda, who left him three years ago for another man?  Bryce Breyton resented his father's remarriage but doesn't have an alibi for the night Amanda disappeared. Nora Breyton despised the beautiful young woman who broke up her family. Jake likes money motives and there are enough to peg all three Breytons for the murder. Sam likes passion motives. If Amanda was running off with another man at the time of her death, who was he?  More importantly, where is he now? The more Sam digs into the case, the more confusing it becomes, because now she is hearing more than one voice.

Echoes From the Grave Sam Casey Mystery Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) S D Tooley Beth Richmond Books in Motion Books

Echoes from the Grave is another solid installment to the Sam Casey mysteries, but overall, it's my least favorite so far. This one was seriously lacking in the quirky humor of the other books and quite frankly, I felt there wasn't enough Sam Casey, which is the reason I read this series.

It's several months after the third book and Sam's beyond her pregnancy and has a baby boy, Dillon. Although she cleared her name from murder charges and her suspension from the police force was lifted, Sam decided to leave the force to focus on motherhood. Because of this, much of the story is about her husband Jake and his partner Frank following an odd investigation when a construction site turns into a probable native american burial site.

When the artifacts and bones are discovered, the Native American community step in and contaminate the site with rituals and distractions to steal the artifacts and bones into hiding. Annoyingly, this ultimately hampers the entire investigation. To make matters worse Alex, Sam's father figure who lives on her estate, stands in the middle of the site and fires arrows at anyone non Native American to keep them away as an additional distraction. When Jake arrives, he has no control over the situation as his mother in law, Abby, leads him by the nose. Sam arrives and is able to scatter the crowd, but not before Alex gets into a fight with the development owner who insulted Abby. Alex is thrown into jail where he refuses to speak, even to defend himself, and ends up wasting much of the book away in jail.

In the meantime, Sam is having new visions that are scattered and inconsistent, but one is clear enough to identify that one of the skeletons in the grave site is not ancient and they're able to track it down as the wife of the development owner who supposedly ran away with her lover three years ago. As the story plays out, it leads to a plethora of suspects that redefines the term red herring, and ultimately uncovers a mass serial killer.

Because I don't particularly care for Jake, this diminished the overall enjoyment of the story. Although he gets better with each installment, he still underestimates his wife and treats her like a child. Aside from that, the story was like a wild goose chase and the police procedure this go around was pretty sloppy. Their inability to solve the case is mocked by the press and deservedly so. Using Sam as a consultant on the case was annoying because they were constantly blocking her from evidence and information. Her investigations and interactions were fantastic as always, but it was frustrating that this is the first time she couldn't put anything together. The side complexity of Alex in jail was simply out there. I'm still struggling with how it contributed to the overall story except to fill pages and tie in a couple of discoveries that could have easily been managed with more Sam time.

This is still a great series overall and I will be reading the next installment, if not for the excellent mysteries in general, but for the fact that each book does not tie up loose ends. Explanations are typically revealed in the next installment as an afterthought which is slightly grating. I can only hope the next book will be more of Sam and Jackie's antics and less broody Jake.

S.D.tooley really brings this story and all the Native American history to life ..you can really get a sense of her characters
S. D. Tooley is one of my favorite authors. All of her books completely keep you glued to the pages to get to the end of the book. Also like her Lee Driver books.
Can get enough of the Sam Casey Mysteries! I feel like I know Sam and her family and friends. Hard to put it down at bedtime!
Excellent mystery . Characters so involved. A page Turner from the beginning to the last chapter won't be able to put it down.
Another fantastic novel by S.D. Tooley. This series has just the right amount of everything in it. When you think you have the answers ,you realize that it is not correct. I Like trying to figure out the next step. Excellent novel.
This book is very good, although I must admit that it did take me a while to get into the plot of the story, unlike her other books. Don't get me wrong it was a great read once I got into the plot of the story I wanted to know who did it. You won't regret reading it.
Love this series. Gives me chills. Feels like I'm there. This author is amazing. Can't wait for the next book
