If I could give this book a 1000 star rating, I would. This is one of those books that clearly gets inside your mind and your soul...I found myself reading this book as slowly as I could just so it would last a bit longer. Can't say I have ever done that before. My advice when you decide to read this masterful piece of historical fiction, clear your schedule because you will not want to put this book down.

I described this book to an entrepreneurial friend as "capitalist historical fiction." It takes the form of a fictional biography of an orphan turned banker, covering the period in US history when capitalism came closest to pure practice, money was generally soundest, and innovation was most profound - to the point of continued repercussion in the modern world. On one level, it's as if Ayn Rand wrote more entertainingly, compellingly and concisely. On another level, it's the sort of look at the meta-history of an era that you needn't appreciate the philosophical elements to enjoy. That is, the philosophical elements are minimal, represented mostly by the plot and the lives of the characters speaking for themselves. The closest we get to a "this is John Galt speaking" moment is no longer than, and somewhat kindred to, D'Anconia's "the root of money" scene. Perhaps I shouldn't mention all this, lest I scare people away who could benefit from vicariously experiencing the life and times in the book. The writing is excellent. Unlike too many Kindle books, it doesn't cry out plaintively for an editor as you stumble from error to error. While I emphasized the capitalist history, it is indeed a "historical family saga" with the best of them. It will make you cheer, cringe and cry for characters you won't soon forget.Product details

I liked this book very much while I was reading it, but I can now appreciate it, and the author's expertise, even more after finishing it. Overall, I think it is a very good effort which gives the reader a better, and broader understanding of a period of time in our nation's history that is not often dealt with within the historical novel genre. The saga of this family is enough to hold the reader's interest, but the real value lies within the final chapters as the author leads the reader to understand the realities of our country's financial and political turmoil is in fact rooted within the historical context of The Golden Pinnacle. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Gore's works.

My life and projects over the last 48 hours were completely overturned by a compulsion bordering on mania to finish your damn book! I invested a full day of my own writing time reading yours.
Second.- Thank you Robert Gore. You have given me a new hero and a new villain to understand my life through and guide my choices. I look forward to the predictably many inspirational moments I will have moving forward - thinking about WWDDD as I face my moral and work challenges. I feel better having known Mr. Durand.
Third, I am glad to have another novel to recommend whose characters and logic cause the reader to confront the basic facts about human character and work - especially the world of banking and finance - you exposed the shadows to light and revealed its manifold colors. Well done!
Fourth - If you have not read Golden Pinnacle yet, give yourself the gift of doing so. it will be a treat for you.

Robert Gore tells the life story of Daniel Durand as he tells the reader the story of the Industrial revolution. This is not the story of robber barons and greed that the history books tout. Instead this is the story of risks, innovation, failures and successes when liberty was king.
Too much emphasis has been placed on the ignoble and the power mongers with few stories of hard work and men with drive, ambition and ethics. The Golden Pinnacle tells a story before there was an all powerful government and how it was thrown away in 1913; it will not be embraced by the progressive movement.
Absolutely Brilliant...Mr Gore has brought his master storytelling abilities (see prior book...The Gordian Knot) to the period of development in America between the Civil War the early 20th Century...America vaulted from an agrarian country to an emerging example of what free men and women can accomplish in a relatively short period of time...Robert has shown the spotlight onto the heart of a free market system of mutually benefical exchange between men and women who profit from a peaceful exchange of ideas and the products of those ideas...a time where we were as close to a capitalist society as we have ever come...and thru, Robert's spotlight, may we find our way again to raise civilization to new hights...
If you admire production and capitalism you will love this book. If you don't, perhaps you will find out why you should.
This is an excellent book that (rare these days) casts businessmen as heroes and even admired politicians as men after power who don't care about the lives they cost in their pursuit of it. I wasn't that keen on the start, when the protagonist is fighting in the US civil war, but mileage will no doubt vary on that one. However once he left the war and began his career and the rest of his life, I found it gripping. It captures the feel of living through an exciting time in history, as the industrial revolution took off in the USA and the most productive individuals did great things, until the men who preferred to live by force and government favour begin to white-ant it. The author does a good job of painting characters and making you care about what happens to them.
I finally got around to reading this book. It reminds of other non-fiction books from that period; the people back then seemed so inventive and industrious, like nothing could stand in their way. Life was a lot better in those days. People were alive.
